Mandatory to quote UTN in Income Tax Return to claim TDS/TCS

The Income Tax Returns for AY 2009-10, contain a column for quoting Unique Transaction Number (UTN) for every TDS/TCS claim by the assessee. The credit for any TDS or TCS claim will not be allowed to the assessee unless the assessee quotes the relevant UTN for every TDS and TCS claim and the said UTN matches with the UTN in the database of the Income Tax Department.

The UTN for TDS/TCS transactions in the Financial Year 2008-09 (AY 2009-2010) will be assigned by NSDL from the transactions reported in the Quarterly Returns received by it. The NSDL will email the UTN file to the deductor, who will be required to inform the UTN to the deductees. However the NSDL will also create the facility for independent viewing of UTN by the deductee from its website.
